Currently I am in Searcy, Arkansas for a 2 week intensive training for the Avanti Italia program. " Avanti Italia (Forward Italy) is a Christ-centered, service-based, two-year program designed to equip college graduates for a lifetime of cross-cultural ministry." I will be leaving for Italy on September 22, 2008.
There are 6 of us training, but only 2 of us leaving in September.
We are blessed to have some very wise men teaching our classes. Every morning at 8:00 Dr. Carl Mitchell talks to us about the personality tests we took on the first day. I have already learned a lot about myself (ha). At 9:00 on Monday and Tuesday, Flavil Yeakley gave us an overview of Mormonism and Jehovah's Witnesses. Today, Howard Bybee talked to us about the Catholic Doctrine. At 10:00, Dr. Don Shackelford gave us an overview of church history, and that class will be continued by Allen Diles and Dr. Paul Haynie over the next two weeks. At 11:00 Jim Woodroof talks about the Beatitudes. He gives a lot of perspective that I have never thought about. We have been working on our singing with Joli Love at 1:oo. Ryan and Paula Butterfield come in at 2:00 and talk to us about their experience in Avanti. They have been very helpful in answering a lot of questions we have. At 3:00 Dr. Don England talks about faith and evidences, and gave us each a copy of the two books he wrote on the subject. Dr. Duane Warden is taking us through the book of Galations. Next week, we will have a lot of the same classes, but also English Using the Bible with Ken and Terri Graves, Eastern and Muslim Religions with Gordon Hogan, The Gospel and Post Modernism with Bruce McLarty, Italian Churches and Children's Classes with Dan and Suzanne Reed, and Cross Cultural Communication with Dr. Howard Norton. On Saturday, we will be doing a Ropes Course at Camp Wyldewood.
Everyone here has been very helpful and hospitable. We have been invited into homes for meals and taken good care of. This is a very exciting, yet busy time. Please keep us all in your prayers. My teammates are Chad Fetters, Annalisa Siegel, Kimberly Hunter, Andrew Brown, and Lindsay Walle.
